By the 1940s, the world had changed again. War reshaped the country. Women entered work once closed to them. Healthcare roles shifted under pressure. Dental hygienists hoped to serve during World War II, and in 1940, the California State Association petitioned ADHA to approach Congress about including dental hygienists in commissioned Army rank alongside other health-related roles. The effort did not succeed.
The Navy commissioned dental hygienists, but the Army would not commission its first four dental hygienists until 1970. Progress came unevenly. And inside California, unity itself became complicated.
In 1941, the California State Dental Hygienists’ Association divided into two organizations: the Northern California State Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Southern California State Dental Hygienists’ Association. Some said the split was about policy. Some said it was geography. California is not a small state. Distance can become disagreement when people must travel hundreds of miles just to sit at the same table.
Was it conflict?
Was it practicality?
Was it both?
The answer matters less than the consequence: the profession now had two centers of gravity.
North and South.
Separate, but not silent.
And when the biggest battles came, they would have to decide whether distance mattered more than survival.
